Best & Worst Fashion on Oscar 2011
For years, it seems like strapless and one-shoulder dresses have been all the rage at red carpet events on Oscar 2011. So we welcomed the refreshing short- and cap-sleeves trend worn by actress nominees Amy Adams and Michelle Williams at the Oscars this year.
Red was a popular color choice for many high-profile actresses (Anne Hathaway, Jennifer Lawrence, Sandra Bullock), as were champagnes, blushes and nudes. Lace detailing also showed up on many gowns (Scarlett Johansson, Mila Kunis).
In the accessories department, minimalism was in full effect. Bangles and cocktail rings were popular, but many ladies left the necklaces at home and let their flawless skin do the talking.
Another awards ceremony is in the books, but the photos will live on forever. Let’s see who will and won’t be embarrassed 10 years from now:
BEST DRESSED :
JENNIFER LAWRENCE: My best friend and I went back and forth on Lawrence’s red Calvin Klein gown. I thought Lawrence’s simple look was jaw-dropping, and then my pal pointed out that her dress looked “very Baywatch.” And she was totally right! Luckily, the Best Actress nominee has the stellar bod to pull off a form-fitting dress reminiscent of a bathing suit. The only thing that would have made it better was some kind of sparkly necklace to complement her clutch and bangle.
CELINE DION: Anyone that knows me know that I have a pretty big aversion to this Canadian songstress. But I’ve gotta give credit where it’s due, and she was, like, WHOA, at the Oscars. Her post-baby bod looked incredible in a form-fitting Armani Prive gown, and her funky necklace was a spot-on accessory for her deep neckline.
REESE WITHERSPOON: If Mattel made an Academy Awards Barbie, they’d already have their muse in Reese Witherspoon. We loved her modern, strapless black and white Armani dress, and her full, flippy, retro ponytail added an unexpected flair. Dangly emerald earrings and a green cocktail ring for a pop of color, and voila! Red carpet success.
JENNIFER HUDSON: I’m not sure I know anyone in real life that can pull off wearing tangerine, so the fact that Jennifer Hudson A) wore it to the biggest award show in town, and B) looked absolutely stunning in it, makes her my favorite of the night. Loved the Versace gown, loved her old Hollywood hair, but the best accessory? Her confidence, newly svelte figure and bright personality.
GWYNETH PALTROW: I am completely in love with Paltrow’s look, which, besides Hudson left the biggest impression with me. Her silver, sparkly Calvin Klein sheath had just a touch of spunk in its colorful waistline brooch — a pattern that was repeated in matching earrings. Leaving her hair down and casual was a shrewd choice. I think anything else would have made the look too severe.
HELEN MIRREN: Mirren always looks stunning to me, but if I look as good at 45 as Mirren does at 65, I will be the happiest chick in all the land. Somehow, she always manages to be classy and elegant, without losing sight of being chic and modern — all while remembering her age. Tonight’s pewter gown was no exception. Love you, Helen!
WORST DRESSED :
MELISSA LEO: Leo may have taken home the Best Supporting Actress statue, but somewhere, an elementary school is missing about 100 paper snowflakes and a roll of gold cellophane from the art supply closet. Not only were the materials on her Marc Bouwer dress disjointed and hard on the eyes, but the tall neckline was totally excessive. Adding insult to injury, her hair looked like she’d just rolled out of bed to hit the Starbucks drive-through.
CATE BLANCHETT: I appreciate seeing a different look on the red carpet, but Blanchett’s lavender Givenchy was confusing and, well, fugly. Maybe we could have been down with it if not for that bizarre circle outline around her torso. But when combined with the futuristic shoulders and old-fashioned-looking beading, this gown had more personalities than Sybil…and we didn’t really like any of them.
SHARON STONE: A few talking heads on the red carpet praised Stone for her look, but it made me want to to hose her down and have her start anew. The black, one-shoulder dress wasn’t the offender — in fact from the armpits down she looked good. But her hair was too tall, her eye make-up was too bold and dark, and her lips were too red. Per my best friend, “I don’t want to see a woman that old look like she just had an all nighter.”
