Best & Worst Fashion on Oscar 2011

February 28th, 2011 Comments off

For years, it seems like strapless and one-shoulder dresses have been all the rage at red carpet events on Oscar 2011. So we welcomed the refreshing short- and cap-sleeves trend worn by actress nominees Amy Adams and Michelle Williams at the Oscars this year.

Red was a popular color choice for many high-profile actresses (Anne Hathaway, Jennifer Lawrence, Sandra Bullock), as were champagnes, blushes and nudes. Lace detailing also showed up on many gowns (Scarlett Johansson, Mila Kunis).

In the accessories department, minimalism was in full effect. Bangles and cocktail rings were popular, but many ladies left the necklaces at home and let their flawless skin do the talking.

Another awards ceremony is in the books, but the photos will live on forever. Let’s see who will and won’t be embarrassed 10 years from now:

BEST DRESSED :

JENNIFER LAWRENCE: My best friend and I went back and forth on Lawrence’s red Calvin Klein gown. I thought Lawrence’s simple look was jaw-dropping, and then my pal pointed out that her dress looked “very Baywatch.” And she was totally right! Luckily, the Best Actress nominee has the stellar bod to pull off a form-fitting dress reminiscent of a bathing suit. The only thing that would have made it better was some kind of sparkly necklace to complement her clutch and bangle.

CELINE DION: Anyone that knows me know that I have a pretty big aversion to this Canadian songstress. But I’ve gotta give credit where it’s due, and she was, like, WHOA, at the Oscars. Her post-baby bod looked incredible in a form-fitting Armani Prive gown, and her funky necklace was a spot-on accessory for her deep neckline.

REESE WITHERSPOON: If Mattel made an Academy Awards Barbie, they’d already have their muse in Reese Witherspoon. We loved her modern, strapless black and white Armani dress, and her full, flippy, retro ponytail added an unexpected flair. Dangly emerald earrings and a green cocktail ring for a pop of color, and voila! Red carpet success.

JENNIFER HUDSON: I’m not sure I know anyone in real life that can pull off wearing tangerine, so the fact that Jennifer Hudson A) wore it to the biggest award show in town, and B) looked absolutely stunning in it, makes her my favorite of the night. Loved the Versace gown, loved her old Hollywood hair, but the best accessory? Her confidence, newly svelte figure and bright personality.

GWYNETH PALTROW: I am completely in love with Paltrow’s look, which, besides Hudson left the biggest impression with me. Her silver, sparkly Calvin Klein sheath had just a touch of spunk in its colorful waistline brooch — a pattern that was repeated in matching earrings. Leaving her hair down and casual was a shrewd choice. I think anything else would have made the look too severe.

HELEN MIRREN: Mirren always looks stunning to me, but if I look as good at 45 as Mirren does at 65, I will be the happiest chick in all the land. Somehow, she always manages to be classy and elegant, without losing sight of being chic and modern — all while remembering her age. Tonight’s pewter gown was no exception. Love you, Helen!

WORST DRESSED :

MELISSA LEO: Leo may have taken home the Best Supporting Actress statue, but somewhere, an elementary school is missing about 100 paper snowflakes and a roll of gold cellophane from the art supply closet. Not only were the materials on her Marc Bouwer dress disjointed and hard on the eyes, but the tall neckline was totally excessive. Adding insult to injury, her hair looked like she’d just rolled out of bed to hit the Starbucks drive-through.

CATE BLANCHETT: I appreciate seeing a different look on the red carpet, but Blanchett’s lavender Givenchy was confusing and, well, fugly. Maybe we could have been down with it if not for that bizarre circle outline around her torso. But when combined with the futuristic shoulders and old-fashioned-looking beading, this gown had more personalities than Sybil…and we didn’t really like any of them.

SHARON STONE: A few talking heads on the red carpet praised Stone for her look, but it made me want to to hose her down and have her start anew. The black, one-shoulder dress wasn’t the offender — in fact from the armpits down she looked good. But her hair was too tall, her eye make-up was too bold and dark, and her lips were too red. Per my best friend, “I don’t want to see a woman that old look like she just had an all nighter.”

Lady Gaga's Meat Dress

October 4th, 2010 Comments off

Jaws dropped when Lady Gaga took the stage at the 2010 Video Music Awards last night wearing meat from head to toe. And, surprise — her VMA meat dress was made with REAL MEAT! Franc Fernandez, the Los Angeles-based designer/artist behind the dress, confirmed that it was real meat when we caught up with him this morning. But now that we know it’s REAL, we’re left with so many more burning questions for Franc Fernandez! Did it smell? Was it bloody? Was it heavy? Was Lady Gaga comfortable? So, we chatted with designer Franc Fernandez tonight to find out all the juicy details. Find out everything you ever wanted to know about Lady Gaga’s meat dress below!

What was your inspiration?
Franc Fernandez: “I was contacted by her stylist, Nicola Formichetti, and they had already shot the picture with Terry Richardson in the meat bikini for Vogue Hommes Japan. They told me that they wanted to make a main dress [out of meat], so I did it.”

What kind of meat was it?
“I don’t know what it’s called in English, but in Argentina, it’s called matambre. I went to my butcher to get it, in Los Angeles in the valley. He’s the butcher that my family goes to. I’m trying to get him a signed picture of it.”

How many pounds of meat did you buy?
“I bought a lot of meat because I wanted extra. I would say more than 50 pounds of meat. Is that a lot?”

How heavy was it?
“It was fairly heavy. She said it was the most comfortable dress of the night, though. I’m guessing it weighed around forty pounds. It’s built on a corset, so the weight is distributed on her chest, so it’s not like it’s hanging off her neck.”

Was it comfortable?
“She said so.”

Were there leftovers?
“Not very much, no.”

Did it leave a blood trail?
“No, not at all. It’s actually very clean meat, very sturdy and strong and doesn’t run at all. It’s the meat you use to make a roast, where you roll it in a tortilla and put it in the oven. Hence, the shoes — that’s why they were wrapped in butcher twine.”

Did it smell?
“Gaga said it smelled good. It had a sweet smell. It hadn’t been sitting out for more than five hours. And it’s not a heavy gross meat.”

Did you have to keep it refrigerated?
“While it was being made it was refrigerated, [worked on] and then refrigerated. It took a span of two days on and off. Maybe three with sourcing and getting materials and everything.”

Will this dress “go bad”?
“Well, yes. And it’s a dress that will dry out. The meat dries out, rather than rotting. It becomes jerky. But, it shouldn’t be worn again.”

Was the look designed, or did you drape it naturally?
“I just did the meat. You can’t really design something that we’re making out of organic pieces. It’s like ‘This piece can go here,’ and you look at the cuts you have and you drape it.”

How do you drape meat?
“I’ve done some draping, it just seemed logical to me. The way I was doing it, nothing about it was much of a challenge, except for the time it took. I had helping hands that were great. It was just sewing through meat, which is a little weird, but it’s not rocket science. I just used regular string, some stronger thread, nothing unusual.”

What did it feel like on Lady Gaga’s body?
“There was a corset but the rest of it was skin on skin. Initially it was cold, but then it warmed up. Not too much, though. She said she wasn’t warm at all, especially under those lights, it didn’t heat up.”

Did Gaga have to be sewn into the dress?
“She went in through the bottom. Some of it she was sewn into. I was backstage.”

Did you treat the meat with any preservatives?
“No, not at all.”

How did you transport the dress?
“I’m in Los Angeles. So, I had a little cooler that I carried it in — its own little coffin.”

When Lady Gaga sat down, did the meat rub onto the chair upholstery?
“Well, it shouldn’t have because it’s not a sticky meat. It’s not a messy dress at all, surprisingly. But I didn’t see the seat after she sat on it. But I’ve been handling that meat for two days and there is nothing messy about it.”

What would the dress feel like? Like for Cher and those who touched it?
“It would feel like meat I suppose. It’s all natural.”

What happens to the meat dress now?
“The dress will be put in an archive with all of her dresses. The Gaga Archives, I suppose. It won’t last, that’s the beauty of it. When it is brought out again, hopefully it will be in a retrospective, and it will be a different dress, which is the best thing. I like the idea of it changing and evolving into something else. My butcher said I could taxidermy it if I wanted it to stay the way it is, and I didn’t want to stay that way. Seems like a waste to keep it that way, than to watch it change.”

How did you come up with the idea of butcher strings on her shoes?
“I was referencing the whole meat theme. I bought the strings at a butcher supply store.”

What were the crystal pieces on her meat purse?
“It’s an antique brooch that was applied to the meat.”

Gaga said this dress represents that we shouldn’t be treated like a piece of meat. What does this dress represent for you?
“I have to agree with her. I just think it looked great.”

Where is it now?
“I’m not sure. She has people who handle everything, so it’s with them.”

Would you create this look again?
“I think it’s just that—it’s just the meat dress. There’s not going to be meat dresses in the future. This was made for a specific purpose. It’s what it is.”

When you saw her wear this dress, what went through your mind?
“She’s wearing my meat dress! It just looked great on her and she made it look easy and things come very naturally to her.”

5 Secrets a Fashion Stylist

June 24th, 2010 Comments off

Project Runway star and fashion guru Tim Gunn gets candid on the cutthroat world of fashion, and how to kill ‘em with kindness in his new book Gunn’s Golden Rules.

Secret #1: Good Manners Are the Mark of True Class
“This book is my manifesto for kindness, generosity, and integrity. My mother constantly corrected me in all things: behavior, grammar, attitude. But my manners also came from when I was in college and began participating in critiques. You have to speak with someone respectfully about their work and be honest and open, without hurting them.

Secret #2: Being Critical Without Being Rude Is an Art
“I learned early on in teaching how easy it is to hurt a young person and that’s never my intention. I have had a student throw his portfolio across the room and storm out, sobbing and then we couldn’t find him, and I thought, “Oh God, this is exactly what he wants me to go through — this torment,” and I did. So I’ve learned the hard way to try to never insult someone’s character. You never say things like, ‘Well if you didn’t arrive here thirty minutes late every day.’ But I still have to stop myself at times thinking, how do I phrase this in such a way so this person does not shut down like a garage door and not let me in? It’s hard. I would never say it’s easy.”

Secret #3: Use Your Anxiety to Your Advantage
“On my first day teaching my own classroom, I threw up before I entered the building. I realized that teaching was either going to kill me or cure me, and I was determined that it was not going to kill me. I kept thinking that I could not let my mentor down. She had hired me and I thought, I just cannot disappoint her. Did I want to stay home and hide under the blankets in bed? Yes! But, I thought, I can’t let her down. I really do believe that it is good to have people outside of yourself that you do not want to disappoint because when you are ready to throw in the towel and say, “This is it!” if you think about that other person, you probably will stick it out. But there hasn’t been a single semester of teaching, even twenty-nine years’ worth, when I don’t have some serious butterfly moments meeting a class for the first time. But nervousness is good, it’s useful, it keeps you on your toes, it keeps you alert. It means you’re not taking things for granted.”

Secret #4: Find Your Balance
“I have my mantra about silhouette, proportion, and fit. I believe that when they are in harmony and balance, you’ll look great in anything. It’s not about a particular item of clothing or particular accessory; it’s about the whole head-to-toe look! Think of yourself as a series of thirds from your shoulders to your toes, and dress observing those demarcations. The underlying message being, don’t cut yourself in half with your apparel.”

Secret #5: Remember That Actions Speak Louder Than Words
“In my book, I include a not-so-favorable story about Anna Wintour. I had seen her exit a fashion show by being carried down five flights of stairs by her two male bodyguards — all to avoid having to ride the elevator with the rest of us. I told the New York Post about what I had seen and Anna had a terrible reaction to it, and put me through such torment over it. If that hadn’t happened, I wouldn’t have included it in the book. But the message is, “Anna, accept responsibility for your behavior. If you don’t want people writing or talking about this, then don’t let two men carry you down five flights of stairs.” Vogue has already come out with a response saying that I have a “vivid imagination.” All I can say is, you can’t make this stuff up. Truth is definitely stranger than fiction.”

Get Gorgeous in a Flash

June 22nd, 2010 Comments off

1. Go for contrasting lids and tips.
Pair a smoldering eye look with a crisp off-white nail polish. The combo looks elegant, plus you won’t have to worry about your manicure matching your clothes.

2. Get tan and toned.
Look like a golden goddess by mixing liquid bronzer with a firming body cream, then massage it into your arms. It’ll temporarily tighten your skin and give it a glow, says Scarlett Messina, a Pennsylvania-based makeup artist.

3. Perfect your complexion.
Camouflage any pimples by applying a yellow-based cover-up to counteract the redness. Use a concealer brush to pat it on precisely, then blend the edges with your ring finger, says Tracy Brennan, owner of Kalologie, a beauty boutique in Los Angeles.

4. Pump up the volume.
For oomphy, tousled strands, try this trick from Nathaniel Hawkins, a celeb hairstylist who has worked with the Olsen twins: When you’re finished blow-drying your hair, switch to the cool setting, flip your head over, and aim the nozzle around randomly for a few minutes. “This creates pockets of air between your locks so they look extra full,” he says.

5. Sweeten up your cheeks. Create a foxy flush with a deep berry powder blush. Use a fluffy brush to swirl it in small, circular motions over the apples of your cheeks and back toward your hairline, says NYC makeup artist Greg Vaughan. This will blend the color evenly.

6. Make your gloss multitask.
Keep a pearly white lip gloss in your desk drawer to slick not only on your lips but also on your brow bones and cheekbones as highlighter, says Pati Dubroff, an L.A.-based celebrity makeup artist.

7. Rework your hair flair.
A glittery accessory adds instant glamour to any hairstyle. If you forget to bring one to work, use a brooch from your sweater.

8. Fake a gorgeous glow.
Mix one part foundation with one part liquid illuminator, and then use your fingertips to massage it all over your face, says Brennan. Try American Beauty All Over Face Glow in Gold Glow, $15, and Mark Duotint in Double Rose, $6. Top it off with a dusting of a light-reflecting shimmer powder.

9. Sweeten your handshake.
Since you’re going to be shaking hands and mingling, mist your fragrance on your palms so that your touch will release a small amount of scent throughout the night.

10. Work a sexy updo.
Starting with dry locks, tease the hair around your crown, then flip your head upside down and mist the underneath layers with hair spray, says Patrick Melville, creative director of Warren-Tricomi salons. Flip back up, then gather all of your hair — except the front section — into a loose bun and secure with bobby pins. Now mist those face-framing pieces with hair spray and use a round brush to blow dry them so they’re sleek. Insert a sparkly hair accessory a few inches above one of your ears.

11. Prep your lids.
Before you apply any eye makeup, blend a creamy concealer onto your lids and into the inner corners of your eyes. This will give your shadow a base to stick to and conceal any redness.

12. Score perfect party legs.
If you don’t have enough time for a full in-the-shower shaving session, just smooth baby oil onto your legs before you take the razor to them, says Dana Minkin, owner of the Gloss Day Spa in New York City. “The oil protects your skin and will leave your legs extra satiny.”

13. Revive your manicure.
Slick a shiny, clear top coat over whatever polish you have on your nails. It’ll give them a glossy finish and prevent nicks so your mani will look freshly done, says Sunshine Outing, a nail technician at Haven spa in New York City.

14. Go for a smoldering stare.
A smoky eye effect is a classic night-out look. To do it: Line the rim of your upper and lower lashes with a black eyeliner, says Charlie Green, an NYC makeup artist who works with Heidi Klum. Now use a stiff brush to smudge the pencil into your lashes. Finish by sweeping a dark shadow onto your lids.

15. Nix a shiny nose.
Left your powder compact at home? Tone down a glaring T zone with a piece of one of those toilet-seat covers in the ladies’ room. It’ll act as a blotting paper, says Mary Lisa, a makeup artist at the Julien Farel salon in NYC.
